*A new application is required each year of study and is subject to a credit and affordability assessment, which determines what you qualify for. It is strongly recommended you keep finance low to avoid the risk of not being able to secure finance for the duration of the studies.


Make sure you are covered

The student and the principal debtor must be covered. Insurance cover is compulsory and you may take our Customer Protection Plan, which covers you and the student in the event of death and permanent disability. Alternatively, you may need a suitable replacement policy if you wish to use your own insurance cover.

Qualifying criteria

  1. Over 18 years of age
  2. Principal debtor must earn R6 000+ per month
  3. The student must be registered with an SA tertiary institution

Documents needed

  • A copy of the applicant’s SA green bar-coded ID or Smart Card ID
  • Latest payslip
  • Proof of residence not older than 3 months
  • Proof of enrolment from the educational institution
  • If you do not bank with FNB, your latest 3 months bank stamped statements reflecting 3 months salary deposits.
  • If you are self-employed, the latest 6 months bank stamped statements, Personal Tax assessment (ITA34) and your latest business financials.

Get your card courier delivered to you at your convenience instead of collecting it at a branch.

Activating your card

Couriered cards will automatically be activated within 48 hours on successful delivery to you.

Alternatively you can activate your card using one of the following methods:

  1. Log onto the FNB App
  2. Call the number on the back of your card
  3. Visit your nearest branch
  • Contactless Card feature

A contactless card has an extra function that provides you with another payment method for low value transaction. Simply wave your card in front of a point of sale device to pay.

A payment is successful when you see the green light and hear the beep on the point of sale device. Look out for this wave sign at the pay point or till.

  • Lost Card Protection

Protection in the event of a lost or stolen card

Lost card Protection protects you against unauthorised and fraudulent use of the card (except for PIN-based transactions) from the time of the loss or theft of the card until you have notified FNB of the loss or theft.

  • Card safety (PIN & Limits)

Practicing card safety is a must and fortunately FNB has made it very easy to keep your card safe from fraud, as long as you follow basic guidelines.

Card limits

Start by setting your account limits and, to be safe, set balance-alerts which automatically notify you when your balance has reached a specified level. You can choose how you want to receive the information (SMS, email or both). Set your individual card limits on the App for both local and international spending .

Keeping your PIN safe

Don’t let your FNB card out of your sight during a transactions and keep your PIN a secret.

How to change your PIN?

  1. Go to a FNB ATM
    • Use the default PIN
    • Select “More Options”
    • Select “Manage PIN & Limit”
    • Select “Change PIN” and follow prompts
  2. Visit you nearest branch

Your newly selected PIN will only work once enabled at an FNB ATM

  • Contactless card security

Is contactless card secure? 
Yes, Contactless card payments are processed like other bank cards

Could I unknowingly make a purchase if I walk past a payment terminal that can read Contactless Cards? 
No. The Contactless card is designed to ensure that the card holder is always in control. The cashier must first enter the purchase amount; you must then hold your card in very close proximity to the card reader (within 4cm) in order for the transaction to take place. Pay points or tills can only process one payment transaction at a time, ensuring that no duplicate payments can take place.

Is there any chance that payments may be taken twice from my account? 
No. Contactless card readers are only able to process one transaction at a time.

What should I do if my contactless card is lost\stolen? 
If your contactless card is lost\stolen, go to the FNB App ATM or Branch to cancel the card. In the case of fraud, report the card to the bank within 24 hours
